Margiela, who guards his privacy extremely closely, is known for not even turning up to his own fashion shows. After finishing his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Margiela worked for Jean-Paul Gaultier from 1985 to 1987 and introduced his own brand at the end of their period of cooperation. His first collection for women created for the spring/summer season 1989 was characterised by unconventional materials which later also became his hallmark.
